Mr Herd was a crewman on board the Danish whitefish boat Tiede, which was towed into Lerwick by the Lerwick RNLI lifeboat after fouling her propeller on Thursday, 53 miles north east of the port in gale force eight conditions.

The lifeboat and the Tiede arrived back into Lerwick in the early morning of 15 January.

However the Lerwick RNLI lifeboat was called into action again on Saturday evening after Shetland Coastguard requested assistance to find a person who had fallen in the sea in the Albert Dock.

The lifeboat crew were informed that the person had fallen between two fishing boats, Sunrise and Lynden, which were berthed halfway along the quay on the West side of Albert Dock.

The lifeboat arrived on scene to find that the small inflatable from the SIC ferry Leirna had recovered the person from the water. The lifeboat escorted them round to the old Bressay slip in the small boat harbour. From there he was taken by ambulance to Gilbert Bain Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
